Program Goals
Hope Through Grace has one primary goal
− to prevent colorectal cancer. The
organization provides valuable information to educate the community which
creates awareness and promotes health behaviors to reduce the incidence and
mortality rates of this disease. We do
that by providing thorough information about colorectal cancer and by helping
to fund, in whole or in part, colonoscopy screenings to those who
qualify. Participants are required
to attend an Intake Screening Seminar to be considered for screening
assistance.
What You Will Learn
The main objective of the seminar is to help you understand colorectal cancer. Grace Butler, Ph.D., a Stage III colon cancer survivor, teaches you about colorectal cancer and asks you to complete surveys and forms to help you determine your potential risk factors for the disease. You learn what modifications to your lifestyle work best to reduce your risk. The seminar helps to dispel myths and misinformation and acts as a forum for questions. Ultimately, it helps reduce the fear and anxiety many people have about getting a colonoscopy screening and brings home the urgency of getting screened if you are at risk.
What You Leave With
You will leave with some information and the knowledge that you are now informed on the subject of colorectal cancer and are able to make educated decisions about your health and the health of your loved ones.
How to Register to Attend a Seminar
Call our Intake Coordinator at 713-668-HOPE (4673), Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We will ask you a number of questions such as your name, address, contact numbers, date of birth and e-mail address. We will ask about some of your family health history, particularly about any history of colorectal cancer in your family. In addition, we must have the following information on file before the day of the seminar:
-
If a clinic has sent you, you must have the name, address and telephone number of the clinic and the name of a physician at the clinic.
We will place you on a waiting list and call you when we schedule the next seminar. If you are reading this for someone who cannot speak English, please be advised that the person who calls to register a non-English-speaking participant will be the primary contact and must be at least 18 years old. Online registration will be available soon.
What to Bring to the Seminar
- You MUST bring proof of U.S. Citizenship.
- You MUST bring a copy of your driver's license or other form of ID.
Interpreters
We make every attempt to provide interpreters for our seminars. However, there are times when we are unable to arrange this unless someone volunteers to do so. Because of limited space, we try to arrange with one of the registered participants to bring a interpreter, who then serves as interpreter for the group. When you call, tell the Intake Coordinator about your needs and we will do all we can to accommodate you. If you know someone who can act as an interpreter for the group let us know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
